Meet Dr. Birnbaum
Herbert S. Birnbaum, DMD
Herbert S. Birnbaum received his B.A. from Brandeis University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in an accelerated three year course of study. In 1980 he received his D.M.D. degree from the Henry M. Goldman School of Graduate Dentistry at Boston University. While in dental school, he was chosen by the international student body of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity to serve as International Undergraduate Representative. He then completed a residency in General Dental Practice at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and Montefiore Hospital, and subsequently returned to his hometown of Newton, Massachusetts, where he established his private practice of general dentistry.
A Respected, Recognized Leader in the Dental Field
Dr. Birnbaum is Assistant Professor, Part-time of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He served as Faculty Supervisor of Harvard's Licensed Practitioner Clinic and is the recipient of numerous recognition's and commendations from his patients, students and colleagues alike. He received the Faculty Award, the highest award bestowed upon a faculty member by the graduating class, and the Part-Time Faculty Award from his colleagues in the Department of Restorative Dentistry in Bio-materials Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
He has also been repeatedly recognized as one of Boston's Top Rated Dentists by the Boston's Consumer Checkbook. His colleagues have elected him to his current posts as both Program Chair of the American Academy of Dental Science and President of Harvard's Chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Societies. Dr. Birnbaum also served as President of the Harvard Odontological Society.
Carrying on the Legacy of Leading-Edge Dental Care
The credentials and accolades, however, explain only part of what makes the dental practice of Dr. Herbert Birnbaum so uniquely inviting. Outside of the dental school setting and even preceding it, Dr. Birnbaum was mentored by his father, Jacob Birnbaum, a highly respected dental technician, dental educator and leader, who served as President of the Dental Laboratory Association of Massachusetts and taught at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. For the first 14 years of Dr. Herbert Birnbaum’s career, he had the privilege of practicing in the room adjacent to his father’s dental laboratory, in his parents’ home. The high standards and precision of his father were a molding force for Dr. Birnbaum, and the warmth and genuine caring cultivated in the home office setting with his mother assisting him chairside were a magnet for patients. When his father retired, in 1994, Dr. Birnbaum and his wife, Connie, continued the tradition by building a new home office just down the street. Their office, shortly thereafter, was highlighted as a model for a home office in a textbook on dental office design published by Dental Economics.
Active in the Dental & Local Communities
Dr. Birnbaum is active in the dental community and in an array of community-wide causes and organizations in Boston and elsewhere. For his many contributions, he received the Dean's Community Service Faculty Award from the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He is also involved in the Holocaust Survivors Oral Health program of the Alpha Omega International Dental Society.
